Ground source heat pump in Rhondda Cynon Taff
This beautiful, 6 bedroom country home comes with uninterrupted views of its 5 acres of landscaped gardens. Built in 1993 as a family home to the owner’s own design, the house makes extensive use of traditional materials, including Costwold Stone exterior, hardwood windows surrounded set in Bath stone and a stone roof.
The Problem
Large homes can run up large running costs and its country location meant that mains gas wasn’t an option. The owners wanted an economical and environmentally solution to heat their home.
The Solution
The property and its extensive grounds provide a perfect environment for a ground source heat pump. WDS Green Energy’s engineers carried out a heat loss calculation on the building to determine the size of the system and length of ground loops required, and specified a 40kW Nibe F1345 ground source heat pump with 2,000m of ground loops to be installed in the gardens.
The Benefits
The efficiency of the ground source heat pump alone means that the owners are now saving over £3,000 a year on their energy bills compared to an alternative fossil fuel system, as well as avoiding the potential hassle of regular fuel deliveries to their property. The system also qualifies for the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which pays the owners for the amount of renewable energy they use to heat their home for 7 years. Combined with the savings on their bills, this meant that the system will have paid for itself within 3 years and then continue to return an income for the remaining years of the RHI, and provide savings on their energy bills for years to come.
