Ground Source Heat Pump Installation in Abercynon, Rhondda Cynon Taff
Situated at the mouth of the Cynon valley, this purpose-built office building has been built for the ‘not for profit’ organisation, Venture Wales.
Venture Wales is one of the leading business support organisations in the country specialising in helping businesses overcome challenges and to realise their full potential.
The Problem:
The clients wished to achieve a BREEAM Excellent standard for the offices. BREEAM is the most widely-used environmental assessment method for buildings which sets a standard for best practice in sustainable development and this meant meeting the 75kW capacity demand for heating and providing hot water without any support from fossil fuel heating.
The Solution:
WDS Green Energy worked closely with Venture Wales to come up with a heating solution to meet their needs. Aided by WDS Green Energy, a 50% Low Carbon Building programme Phase II grant was obtained towards the cost of the heat pump system.
The clients also incorporated a rain-water harvesting system, bicycle racks and movement sensitive lighting in the build to help Venture Wales achieve their goal of a ‘BREEAM excellence’ building.
WDS installed two Dimplex ground source heat pumps; one 23kW low temperature heat pump and one 40kW high temperature heat pump connected to twelve 100m boreholes to meet the entire heating and hot water demands for the building. The system included a heat meter for logging consumption.
The Benefits:
58 tonnes of CO2 have been saved annually by installing the heat pump system against a fossil fuel system. WDS Green Energy installed a monitoring system in the reception area of the building which showed how the heat pumps were performing and the Carbon emissions saved. A 50% grant from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme made the project viable for Venture Wales and help them achieve their goal of a ‘BREEAM Excellent’ building.
